I like to play with black and white conversion in Photoshop now and then. Here are a few of my attempts. Nothing special but I am learning what to shoot in order to make a good black and white. I also like to play with silhouettes too.
These are all awesome! The first shot looks so desolate (sp?). I just get this feeling of stark silence. The second image is just plain cool. And the fourth one got me right away. Those clouds...was that a long exposure or was that just how the clouds looked that day. It looks like bad weather on the way - very forboding (sp? Gosh...I can't think of how to spell tonight. Too tired!).
The first shot was taken early in the morning not far from home. I was looking for a photograph for an upcoming black and white photo competition and this caught my eye as I drove past. There was just enough fog to isolate the subject and obscure the many trees in the background. I got my knees soaked as I had to get down really really low because the ground sloped downward a bit and not uphill as I would have liked.
I took the forth shot at Meenan's Cove. I noticed the clouds as I was driving towards Rothesay and frantically searched for a spot to properly record the scene without trees and power lines all over the place. I took a number of pictures of the sky but I liked this one the best. I basically exposed for the sky and let the rest end up where it did. I then converted it to black and white and adjusted the curves a bit in Photoshop.
I neglected to comment on the second image. Rita and I were at the Gondola Point ferry and beach on March 8th this year. We were out touring around looking for something to shoot besides fishing shacks frozen in the ice. It was an overcast day and not much was going on. As I walked past this tree it looked to me like a candidate for a silhouette picture. I walked around it a few times until I found what I was looking for and snapped the picture. I think Rita's two Canon cameras Rebelled because when she went to take a picture they both had drained their batteries flat when she wasn't looking. I hear cameras will do that sometimes so I always carry a fully charged spare. Sorry Rita!!!
I have always been interested in photography but since 2004 I switched from film to digital and have really concentrated on improving my photography skill. I trust this shows in the quality of images I am taking. I take photos here on my blog for my own enjoyment and share them with you in hope you, the viewer, will enjoy them too.
